What Do Jehovah's Witnesses Believe About Death?

Jehovah's Witnesses don't believe in everlasting torture or hell. Hades or Sheol is understood to mean the common grave or condition of no longer being alive.

They believe that when someone dies they are in an unconscious state. They no longer exist even in spirit form. They are literally 'dead'. The soul is not separate from the body. It is the same thing. When the body dies, the soul dies.

They believe that the 'anointed' ones or 144,000 ( 144000 ) spiritual Israelites are the only ones who go to heaven and these will rule with Christ over the earth when Jehovah God establishes his Kingdom worldwide.

All other people will be resurrected to live on the earth when Jesus returns and the 1000 year reign of Christ begins. After armageddon the dead will come to life with a brand new physical body. All Jehovah's Witnesses who survive armageddon will be able to reconnect with dead loved ones.

Anyone who dies at Armageddon who isn't a Jehovah's Witness in good standing with the Watchtower Society will perish forever and never live again. That's why Jehovah's Witnesses take their preaching work so seriously. They feel it's God's will for them to warn this wicked world about armageddon on behalf of Jehovah.
